Population Foundation of India has been working with CSRs to sensitize them to invest on family planning (FP). Over the last year, we have been able to secure commitments from the Mobius Foundation to support work on FP in the state of Uttar Pradesh.  In March 2023, we began work in 120 villages in Jarwal block (Bahraich district) through the Umeed project. Based on the initial success, Mobius Foundation has committed a three- year support to scale up in 6000+ villages and 50 blocks across 7 districts, beginning from February, 2024. The Director General, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh has issued a directive to the Chief Medical Officers (CMO) to support implementation of the Umeed project. The project focuses on

  • Training and mentoring of 13,000 nurses, Auxiliary Nursing Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to provide high quality FP services and counselling.
  • Reaching newly married and zero and low parity couples, who have the maximum need, and efforts to increase age at marriage, reduce teenage pregnancies and improve access to safe abortion services.
  • Setting up 1850 FP corners in remote rural areas that provide regular access to condoms, Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCP), Emergency Contraception (ECP), Chhaya and DMPA injectables.
  • Awareness campaigns around early marriages, teenage pregnancy, the basket of contraceptive choices including new methods, ECP, medical abortions and male engagement.
