Family Planning

Family Planning

The ability of women and girls to decide if and when they want to have children, and how many, has a cascading effect on other aspects of their lives as well. Access to accurate information and services related to family planning and contraception empowers them to take more control of their education, career, and economic situation. This also has repercussions for gender equality and poverty reduction.

Since its inception, Family Planning (FP) has been one of the core areas of Population Foundation of India’s work. To further access to family planning for all, we proactively engage with key stakeholders, including policymakers and the media on FP and population-related issues. This is done by generating and disseminating research-based evidence and conducting critical analyses of population-related programmes and policies to accelerate investment and commitment by government and civil society organisations towards a holistic family planning strategy. Our goal is to shift the FP and population discourse to a gender-sensitive and rights-based approach.

Key Milestones

  • Population Foundation of India has launched the Family Planning Resource Bank – a one-stop online source for reliable data on family planning, sexual and reproductive health, and fertility trends – in Hindi.
  • We have been working with the District Working Group (DWG), a convergence platform of key government departments to prioritise and execute actions on family planning and reproductive health at the district level. These DWGs have helped improve the coverage and quality of services in six districts of Bihar.
  • The Secretariat of Advocating Reproductive Choices (ARC) conducted a qualitative assessment in Bihar, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on the availability, access, and quality of reproductive health FP services during COVID-19. Population Foundation of India will be using the findings from the report for strategic engagement with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and state governments to address the gaps and improve the availability and access to FP services.
