A Civil Society Voice at the London Summit on Family Planning (FP)

Posted on October 06, 2017

11 July, 2017, Family Planning Summit, London: In her role as the Civil Society Focal Point of the ARC Coalition, Ms. Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director, PFI, participated in the one-day FP Summit. Organised to coincide with World Population Day as also spotlight the past half-way mark of the FP2020 goals, the Summit provided the window required to assess progress as well as accelerate actions required to bridge the gaps identified. Efforts to reach the FP2020 goal of providing 120 million more women and girls with access to contraceptives by 2020 was discussed as also the Sustainable Development Goal on ensuring universal access to reproductive health, including family planning, by 2030. In the plenary, Ms. Muttreja shared the FP scenario, juxtaposing the present with the past, outlining what women want now as opposed to what they did earlier, throwing in relief the positive changes that have come about in their thinking and in family structures. She touched upon the weakening of social compulsions and the presence of a greater voice for women in both private and public spaces. She noted that a more proactive engagement with men, as responsible partners and parents, was necessary in order to bring about an enduring solution to the current skewed family planning notions and practices.

The Summit saw over 600 policymakers, donors, and advocates from across the globe commit to over $2.5 billion in new funding to make rights-based family planning a reality for adolescents and women and girls, especially those located in remote and isolated areas. The FP2020 partnership also saw new additions, which included three new focus countries and three donor countries, six civil society and 13 private sector partners.

The Family Planning Summit was co-hosted by the UK Department for International Development (UK DfID), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in collaboration with the Family Planning 2020 Secretariat (FP2020) and in close partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Global Affairs Canada.
