Rajasthan government declares PFI-HUP’s Jaipur city programme as a learning site

Jaipur is one of the cities where the Health of the Urban Poor Program (HUP) is implementing its city demonstration programme since 2010. HUP implemented its urban health model based on National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) components in 46 slums covering around 31,060 households. HUP supported the formation of 50 women’s groups, called Mahila Arogaya Samitis (MAS). Empowered with awareness of their rights and government schemes, MAS members are now directly raising issues related to health and sanitation with the required government departments — Health, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, or the Integrated Child Development Services(ICDS).

To promote positive behaviour towards ante-natal care and immunisation, HUP organised Goadh-Bharai – a ceremony in the third trimester of pregnancy for women who had received the prescribed ante-natal care. Similarly, anna-prashan, a ceremony during which solid food is given for the first time to a baby, was held for families with newborns who follow exclusive breast feeding and ensure complete immunisation in the first six months.

The programme has shared its experiences and learning with city health officials from all districts of Rajasthan. An exposure visit for NUHM officials was organised in September 2014, which resulted in Rajasthan government’s Directorate of Medical Health and Family Welfare declaring Jaipur city demonstration site as a learning site for urban health Planning and implementation for urban health professionals. The directorate has also recommended continuation of the Jaipur City Demonstration Programme in order to have HUP’s technical support during the roll out of the NUHM in Rajasthan state.

The government of Rajasthan has also issued an order for the formation of approximately 250 new MAS in Jaipur city under NUHM. Sixty new MAS groups have already been formed in 16 slums, and 30 old MAS groups have been revived. The MAS formed under HUP are going to be adopted under NUHM and will continue to receive support.
