PFI helps lay the foundation for the National Urban Health Mission

Population Foundation of India (PFI), under its Health of the Urban Poor (HUP) programme, took another stride in helping build the foundation of the government’s recently approved National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), by organizing the 1st NUHM Regional Workshop in Mumbai on August 30 and 31, 2013 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Chaired by Mr Nikunj Dhal, Joint Secretary, MoHFW, the workshop brought together senior health officials, policy makers and planners from 12 most urbanized states and five mega cities. The aim of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for cross-learning and taking steps towards effective health planning for cities.

The workshop included a field-visit to health facilities (urban health posts, dispensary, maternity hospitals and a specialized lab for detection of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis) of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), followed by relevant and informative presentations by the Chennai Municipal Corporation and MCGM on the first day. The second day included a presentation by HUP’s technical partner, International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) on Health of the Urban Poor – Evidence from Bhubaneswar, Jaipur and Pune; HUP Baseline Report conducted in the three cities where HUP implements its city demonstration programme. The highlight of first day was the experiential learning from field visits, and on the second day, it was the lively discussion on how states and cities can conduct baseline studies for effective city health planning.

The participants were from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The cities represented were Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

The Joint Secretary concluded the workshop with an announcement that PFI and MoHFW would conduct a similar workshop in the near future for other states and cities not represented at this one.
