Prof Ranjit Roy Chaudhury, PFI Governing Board member and Chairman of the Executive Committee, passes away

Population Foundation of India is in grief at the passing away of Professor Ranjit Roy Chaudhury, Member of PFI’s Governing Board and Chairman of the Executive Committee, following cardiac arrest in Chennai yesterday. He was 84 years old.

One of India’s foremost medical scientists, Prof Ranjit Roy Chaudhury was instrumental in guiding and mentoring PFI over the decades in various capacities since January 29, 1993. He was a Holding Trustee, a member of the Audit Committee, Advisory Council, and the Advisory Group on Community Action. He was chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Health of the Urban Poor program.

Professor Ranjit Roy Chaudhury had an illustrious career spanning many decades. He was on the Expert Committee of the Indian Council of Medical Research and on World Health Organization’s Regional Advisory Committee on Research. He was Advisor to the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, and Chairman of the India’s Expert Committee for Reforms in Drug Regulation and Clinical Trials.

He served as Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology, and later as Dean and Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He was the Founder President of Delhi Medical Council; Member, Board of Governors of Medical Council of India; and President of the Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs. He authored over 275 medical and health research papers.

The President of India bestowed the Padma Shri on him in 1998. The Medical Council of India had honoured him with the Dr B C Roy Award, the country’s highest medical award. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to him by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the College of Medicine, London, and the Indian Society for Study of Reproduction and Fertility.

Prof Roy Chaudhury passing away is a great loss to the country. We at PFI have lost a great leader and guide. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
